Community
Structure
Govan Workspace belongs neither to the public or private sectors. It is
a community-based enterprise, owned and controlled by local people,
whose primary objective is the creation of employment in Govan. All
profits are reinvested in the work of the company or put to other
appropriate community uses. The Board of Directors is elected by the
company’s wider membership which is open to those willing to
subscribe to its objectives.
Economic
Development Strategy
The company has chosen to concentrate its efforts during the past 22
years on the development of premises that would stimulate employment
creation in Govan. The results of that strategy have been encouraging.
There are now 500 jobs. At the same time there are impressive assets
valued at around £2m.
But away from
property, Govan Workspace has ambitious plans
for the long- term
expansion of its work. As profitability increases, the company will
become more able to direct resources to the creation of local
employment in different ways. Such as lending support to local people
moving into self-employment, or introducing innovative training schemes
to assist the long term unemployed. When that time comes, one of the
company's greatest strengths is likely to be its independence as a
community-owned business working to find real solutions to unemployment
at the local level.
